This term, 5/6K have been exploring the religion of Buddhism, in preparation to read our Accelerated Literacy text 'Tyger, Tyger' by Elizabeth Stanley. We discovered that Buddhism was founded on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, an Indian prince, approximately 2 500 years ago. He married young and at the age of 29, he ventured out from his sheltered life in the palace for the very first time. Siddhartha saw a lot of human suffering. He spent years searching for the cause of this suffering, only to find peace and enlightenment whilst meditating under the Bodhi Tree. The bodhi tree is a species of banyan fig native to Nepal and India, southwest China and Indochina east to Vietnam. Although the original Mahabodhi tree, or 'sacred fig' died many years ago, many bodhi trees found today originate from the original tree itself. We created our own bodhi trees using various monochromatic colour schemes, focusing on tints, tones and shades to create dimension in our artworks. Our bodhi trees hang proudly in our classroom and help us to find peace and harmony during our daily meditation time. We hope you enjoy them too! |
