Inspired by the amazing illustrations in Ted Hughes' novel 'The Iron Man', we sketched and shaded our own Iron Man portraits using white chalk and black pastel on black cardstock. We learned that it was important to create a basic outline first, then add detail once the positioning and scale was spot on. Shading with chalk and pastel was easier than it looked, as the corner of a tissue or a plain old finger work as great smudging tools!
As you can see, we have many talented artists in S23K, who are able to represent Iron Man in a variety of forms and moods. What do you think he is feeling when his eyes glow different colours? We hope you enjoy our gallery of Careers Day! There was plenty to see, plenty to do and a lot to imagine for our futures!
Last Monday, we were challenged with the task of using a compass to draw circles. Many students in S23K were caught unawares and found the task really difficult. A few got frustrated and wanted to give up, but we all pulled together and practised until we perfected the skill!
A week on, we've created some amazingly mystical mandalas, not only using circles, but employing our new found knowledge of rotational symmetry to create balanced, symmetrical designs. The word "mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. Loosely translated to mean "circle," a mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organisational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite. Strangely enough, we also learned that a circle has rotational symmetry of an infinite order! Well done S23K for overcoming your challenges to create such AMAZING works of art! "The Iron Man came to the top of the cliff.
S23K created their own 'ideal' communities last term, designing their towns from the ground up. The towns contained all the elements that they thought were important to run a successful community. The design brief required students to include places to study, play, live and worship as well as elements such as places to buy food, memorials and somewhere to seek medical care. Many designs included fancy extras like hotels, alongside the everyday essentials such as police stations. An amazing display of imagination and thoughtful planning is evident in all of these designs. Whether created on cardboard, in the form of a diorama or an intricate Minecraft world, these designs are an impressive showcase of our learning in S23K! Did I mention that Jess named one of her streets 'Gennari Rd'? How awesome is that?!? S23K will be adding some links to their blog posts about the projects in the comments very soon! During Term 2, we were inspired to learn how to weave using THIS basic process that Mrs G found whilst trawling the Internet for crafty ideas. As much as we liked the idea of using old t-shirts, we decided to use wool on shaped wire coat hangers instead. The wool was kindly donated to our class by community members.
As we read Charlotte's Web, we heard all about the intricate weaving process undertaken by Charlotte in the corner of Zuckerman's barn and we learned that weaving is quite a time consuming, measured process. Over and under, under and over, over and through, through and over . . . we created the most beautiful pieces of art that we are immensely proud of! We hope you enjoy our pieces as much as we do! At the end of Term 2, we designed some new covers for E.B White's classic 'Charlotte's Web, which we have studied throughout the term. We were quite fascinated by the effect that different colours, character positioning and cover compositions have on the 'feel' of a book cover and the influence that it might have on the person about to pick up the book! Some of our covers communicated 'warm, fuzzy children's novel about a sweet piggy' whereas others conveyed Fern's fear about Wilbur being harmed. Publishers must choose carefully if they want to sell books to the right audience! Great designing S23K, some potential graphic designers in the making. GOAL for Term 2: 30 Compliments This term we aimed for 5 more compliments than last term, even though this term was only 9 weeks! By the end of week 8, we had a few to go and we were getting a bit nervous. One great day with Ms Meeth while Mrs Gennari was attending a planning day and we had it smashed! Ms Dobell dropped by and complimented us on our classroom, we lined up without a fuss under the COLA (the BEST class in Stage 3), showed impeccable manners during assembly and worked hard in class! Just goes to show that positive behaviour and determination to succeed is a choice and success is ALWAYS within reach if we individually choose to work hard and use teamwork to come together and achieve a goal. We got to enjoy our reward day with technology, a movie with popcorn (Charlotte's Web, of course) a class party AND a hilarious donut eating competition! Our chocolate competition winner Zac came close to conquering the class yet again, but was beaten at the last bite in the iced donut finals. We also loved Tia's unique shoulder eating style! Congrats to our winner, Richard! I wonder how many compliments we will have to collect in Term 3? We hope you enjoy these amazing art creations! These James Rizzi inspired artworks were proudly displayed in the foyer outside our classroom and certainly brightened up the school last term. Our aim is to flood our environment with colour and inspire others to do the same. We are well on our way to success! What do you think about our artistic talents?
